What is a Forklift Mobile Robot?

A Forklift Mobile Robot (FMR) is a driverless forklift truck equipped with SLAM LiDAR navigation, laser fork-tine guidance sensors, and a full safety system certified to ISO 3691-4. It performs the same tasks as a manned counterbalance or reach-truck — pallet pick-up from floor or racking, transport across the warehouse floor, and precise racking — entirely without a human driver.

FMRs are most impactful in repetitive, long-distance pallet moves: inbound dock-to-storage, outbound storage-to-dock, and replenishment from bulk storage to a pick face. These journeys can account for 60–70% of a forklift driver's working time — the FMR handles them autonomously while human drivers focus on exception tasks (irregular loads, yard moves, etc.).

Econocontrol integrates FMRs with WMS, racking barcode/QR location IDs, and dock management systems for a fully hands-off inbound/outbound flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

The laser fork guidance sensor compensates for pallet placement variance up to ±150 mm laterally and ±5° of rotation. If the pallet is outside this range (e.g., severely skewed or missing), the FMR raises a "pallet not found" exception to the FMS and WMS, halts safely, and awaits a manual intervention task — it will never attempt to engage an unreachable pallet.
Yes, with managed zone rules in the FMS. The recommended approach is to define dedicated FMR aisles (marked with floor paint and light-curtain entry/exit) where manned forklifts do not enter during FMR operation. Cross-traffic intersections use FMS-controlled traffic lights. Full mixed-fleet operation without physical separation is possible at reduced speed (0.5 m/s) with additional safety sensor packages.
Minimal changes are needed: a barcode or QR label is applied to each rack location beam (a one-time installation task). No racking structural modifications are required for standard selective racking. For push-back or drive-in racking, a short site survey is conducted to confirm aisle approach geometry before deployment.
